Review: Maybelline Great Lash “Lots of Lashes” Mascara

    Review: Maybelline Great Lash

For years and years, the Maybelline Great Lash mascara has been a cult favorite amongst makeup lovers. It was first released over 40 years ago, and many different versions of the iconic pink-and-green tubed mascara has hit the shelves since. A couple months ago, I thought I’d finally try a tube, and picked up the Great Lash “Lots of Lashes” mascara.

    Review: Maybelline Great Lash

What sets Lots of Lashes apart from the original is the heart shaped (really, it’s just tapered) brush. I’ve always been fond of this shape because you can use the thin end to pick up the smaller lashes toward your inner corners and bottom lash line. Even the larger, rounder end of this brush is rather small though, which helps with control.

The formula itself has a thinner consistency that is rather wet. In my experience, I can certainly see it darkening and thickening my lashes, but I don’t see much lengthening going on…

You know how lashes naturally come to a point at the ends? I lost that effect when applying this mascara, which ended up making them sort of stubby looking. While it didn’t leave clumps, my lashes looked less dense than they actually are because they stuck together to create fewer, thicker lashes. I thought that was weird, since the comb brush looks like it would be defining, right?

Unfortunately, I just don’t think this specific Great Lash works with my short lashes. If you already have long lashes and just need thickening, this might be worth picking up. I wasn’t impressed, but perhaps a different version would look better. Most of the variations are just $6.

Have you tried any of the Great Lash mascaras? What has been your experience?

    1. Recently tried this mascara as well but quickly regretted my purchase. I think I’ll stick to my favorite – Maybelline Great Lash BIG!!!

    2. I don’t know if I’ve tried this mascara. I think I picked up a burgundy version of the Great Lash, but it’s still untried. You can definitely tell you have more volume, at least.

    3. I don’t think I’d ever tried the original GL until probably 6 years ago, when on a JetBlue flight from SoCal back home they gave away packages of them to the ladies (weird, but totally cool!). Of course it was quite welcomed by a makeup junkie like myself. When I tried it I hated it. The brush did NADA to help separate my lashes, and I found the formula to just be wayyyy too wet. I tried it over and under other mascaras that I liked but still couldn’t ever get it to work well for me. Tossed it after trying to make it work a few times. I’ve always found that with my lashes, one of the “mousse” type formulas with the plastic bristle brushes work best for me!

        • LMAO I can’t remember what the promotion was for, but that was the only time I’ve seen anything like that on a flight. Most likely it was a redeye flight too, that’s what we usually took when coming back from California. Giveaway notwithstanding though, JetBlue is still my favorite airline!

    4. I think that Great Lash was my first mascara, also. I hated it but everyone said it was “the BEST stuff!” so I thought that the crappy results were my fault. Imagine my surprise, on trying different brands that it wasn’t me. It was that mascara.

    5. I am still really worried about making my makeup too clowinsh, so I go for a natural, subtle look on everything, and I love the original formula of Great Lashes. It stays in place and is super easy to put on, even for a novice like me. It does really give a natural look, plus it’s available and affordable literally everywhere, so it can always be replaced if lost or traveling. =]

    6. I’m pretty sure Great Lash was the first mascara I ever bought too. Nowadays it’s not my favorite mascara ever – I don’t hate it but I think there are other mascaras that define better, as you said. BUT I have bought the LE color ones in the past year or so! The teal and blue ones were actually pretty bright, as I recall. Not bad for $5 or so.

    7. You have such great lashes to begin with! I think Great Lash was the first mascara I ever bought. Glad to see they changed the wand. Too bad you didn’t like the formula 🙁
