Outfit Inspiration: How to Wear a Dress in Fall

Since I keep my outfits extremely casual throughout Summer in attempt to keep as cool as possible, the weather mellowing out for Fall gives me an excuse to get dolled up a little more. I especially love wearing dresses during fall– they’re great one-and-done pieces that automatically make you look like you put thought into your outfit.

But, since we do have to consider that it gets chillier and windier in most parts this time of year, wearing a dress in fall requires a different choice in accessories to complete the look.

First off, when shopping for fall dresses, look for ones with 3/4 sleeves or long sleeves. They’ll help keep you warm but also make the dress seem less summery and more sophisticated. To keep things casual, t-shirt dresses are having a moment this season! Keep an eye out for plaid or chambray, which are great for a laid-back look.

One of my favorite fall pairings with dresses are wide-brimmed hats. Not only do they add structure to an otherwise flowy outfit, but t hey can also hide any bad hair days caused by the wind!

If your dress ends before your knees, consider wearing tights to stay warm and make the outfit look more seasonally appropriate. I absolutely love choosing patterned tights if the dress is solid to add texture. You could always go classic with solid smooth or ribbed tights that will match anything.

Finally, choose a pair of short-heel ankle booties to complete the look. These will elongate your legs, and add a nice finishing touch without competing with the rest of your look. For a more casual look, search for fold-over booties with buckles. To dress up your look, find almond toe booties in a solid color.

What’s your favorite way to wear a dress in fall?
