Half Up, Half Down Textured Topknot Tutorial

Sponsored post by Mirum Shopper. All opinions are my own.

I think Fall is the best time for beauty looks— it’s comfortably cool so your makeup doesn’t melt off and you aren’t dying to get your hair off of your neck. I love taking this time to really play around with new styles, although it’s also the time of year that gets the most chaotic. That means I also need to streamline my routine and find looks that are on-trend but easy to recreate.

My favorite styles are those that let me work in my natural texture and require minimal work to look put thought-out and put together. One of my favorites: the half up-half down topknot. It looks great with body and texture– which actually helps it come together more easily– and is perfect for first, second, or even third day hair. I think this hairstyle helps showcase my natural texture the best, because the most frizzy part of my hair (the top layer) is pulled away, accentuating the shape throughout the rest of my style without it looking messy.

1. Prep

First, I be sure to prep with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner so that I don’t sacrifice touchable hair for texture. My go-tos for fall are the TRESemme Moisture Rich Shampoo and Conditioner. It leaves my hair soft, shiny, and manageable so I can style it any way I want.

If you have naturally textured hair like I do, you will probably only need to scrunch or twist your hair with your fingers to bring out its shape. If you need a little extra help, try a product like the Nexxus Diameters Lavish Body Gel Spray on towel dried hair to give it a boost. Texture is really important to help get the type of topknot we want— it helps us shape it as well as keeps it in place instead of slipping or drooping.

2. Create the Topknot

I usually let my hair air dry when I want the most texture. Once it’s dry, create two parts on either side of your head and meet them in the middle at the back of your crown. Gather this hair into a topknot and secure with an elastic. Use bobby pins where necessary if you need to secure or shape the bun any more.

3. Finishing Touches

Give your hair touchable hold using the Nexxus Comb Thru Touchable Hold Finishing Mist. It will add shine and help hold your style in place. Use dry shampoo under the top layer of the hair left down to add lift so that it frames your face instead of falling flat. You can also use dry shampoo to re-wear this style on second or third day hair — just grab one that is lightweight and invisible like the Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo.

  1. Love this look! I always feel like my hair is too flat to pull it off, so I need to try using these products first!
