Best Non-Comedogenic Drugstore Foundations for Acne-Prone Skin

As someone with acne-prone skin, choosing a new foundation can be daunting. When you find one that works well for your skin— offering the perfect coverage without breaking you out— it’s akin to the excitement of a new relationship. Even when I’m testing new foundations, I have my go-to staples in my routine for daily wear that I’m loyal to.

The trick to choosing a foundation for acne-prone skin is looking for the non-comedogenic label. Non-comedogenic means that the formula doesn’t clog pores, and in turn is less likely to congest the skin and cause breakouts. While there are many other factors that contribute to whether or not makeup will cause acne, it’s really a case by case basis depending on your skin’s individual sensitivities. Non-comedogenic foundation is a great place to start, though, in finding a good match for problem skin.

Depending on how much coverage I want on a particular day, here are my favorite non-comedogenic drugstore foundations for acne-prone skin.

If I’m taking the time to do my makeup, it’s pretty rare that I go for light coverage. But when I do, I reach for the NYX Bare With Me Tinted Skin Veil. I have an in-depth review of this tinted moisturizer in this post, where you can see a before and after. It will slightly cover any discoloration and unevenness with a light satin finish and hydration that lasts up to 8 hours. It works really well for dry to normal skin, and feels breathable.

I am obsessed with this Hydrating Skin Tint from Neutrogena, which feels so good on the skin with its moisturizing hyaluronic acid formula. Despite its thin consistency, it can actually be built up to medium coverage and is a great everyday product for me when I want a fresh looking complexion.

This is probably my pick for my favorite every-day foundation. The coverage is on the high end of medium and low end of full, with a little concealer being helpful for particularly red blemishes. However, it’s comfortable and easy to layer with a demi-matte finish that looks very natural and offers a radiance without looking shiny. I’ve worn it all day, and it lasts a good 9 hours before it starts to fade. It also has SPF 20 to add protection! You can see my in-depth review in this post.

When you want full coverage that is going to last, there are few products that can beat the Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation. Let’s get one thing clear: it’s got a classic flat matte finish, but I have a few tricks to getting it to look more radiant that I share in this post. You can also add a pea sized amount of moisturizer to make it more comfortable for skin that leans dry. This foundation blurs pores and creates an even canvas for the rest of your makeup, and controls shine throughout the day.
