Statement Outerwear: How to Add a Pop to a Simple Outfit
I was just talking to a friend the other day about how I seriously struggle with buying statement pieces for my wardrobe. To me, the neutral and classic staples are more versatile and will get used more, so that’s what I tend to spend my money on. But then I lament about how my closet bores me and I feel like it’s lacking a distinct style.
So lately, I’ve been looking to incorporate more fun in my outfits by taking some baby steps. One of the easiest ways I’ve been able to step outside my comfort zone is by working in bold outerwear. Fun and colorful jackets or sweaters add a nice pop to your look, but you can take them off easily to tone it down immediately.
I’ll admit, I was pretty anxious about wearing the pink faux fur coat out in public… but I put on my brave face and ended up feeling like a pop star in it. The texture is so fun and hibernation-chic for the winter months. Taking the coat off would reveal a simple long-sleeved blouse, but with a crisscross v-neck detail that gives it a bit more interest on its own. Paired with some classic dark wash skinny jeans from American Eagle makes this simple yet statement-making ensemble complete. I feel super on trend without being too flashy, in my opinion.
The other bold outerwear I’ve been rocking is this red faux leather moto jacket. It literally makes the simplest outfit feel cooler. I usually wear this one over simple tops— this one is a white crocheted tee with a faint pattern, but it’s not too busy. The red leather finish really takes the stage and pulls together this otherwise super simple look.
I like the fact that with statement outerwear on top of basics gives me the power to keep it on or take it off depending on the situation and environment.

Cute looks but totally impractical for where I live. I would freeze LOL
Both are cute and I know we are talking outed wear but umm I love the first shirt!
Thank you! It’s from Express!
I love it! Wear your clothes and rock like a true diva. Fashion is personal, much like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
so much color!
I love that fuzzy jacket, it’s so fun!! Accessories also jazz up a basic outfit–you would look great in a great hat–maybe a fedora?
Fedoras make my head look big, but I love wide-brimmed hats!
Both of those are great jackets on you!
That red jacket is all sorts of hot! I love that pop of color!
That red moto jacket is fabulous.
That furry pink jacket is so cute! I got a big furry jacket earlier in the year and I still have yet to wear it because I’m afraid it’s too much. Hopefully I get some use out of it soon because I think it’s so cute.
Adorable, both! I would love that red moto jacket
Both jackets are very cute and look great on you!
