5 Ways to Keep Jewelry Safe While Traveling

With the biggest travel season of the year coming up, there’s a lot to think about in terms of planning holiday trips. Getting the best deals, layovers vs. direct flights, hotel amenities… it’s easy for things to fall through the cracks. What you don’t want to forget, though, is your jewelry.

If you have jewelry that’s important to you, like my brand new engagement ring for example, the last thing you want to worry about is theft, loss or damage. I shudder at the thought of it! Luckily there are simple ways to keep jewelry safe while traveling so you can relax and have fun with one less thing to worry about!

1. Update the Sizing

Has it been a while since your significant other put a ring on it? When’s the last time you had it sized to fit you perfectly? The best way to avoid losing rings both at home and on vacation. Did you know that quarter and three-quarter sizes exist? Get professionally sized to find your best fit. If you’re like me, where your knuckles are wide but the base of your finger is slim, you can use ring adjusters to keep it more snug while it’s on.

2. Never Check Irreplaceable Pieces

Whether it’s an heirloom or your newest splurge, don’t pack your favorites in checked luggage. In the miserable situation that is missing luggage, if/when it actually makes it back to you, it may not have all of its original contents inside. Keeping your valuable jewelry either in your carry-on or actually on your body will ensure that it’s never out-of-sight.

3. Wear it, Don’t Flaunt it

While wearing your jewelry is the best way to not misplace it while in transit, you probably don’t want to be flashing it around. Calling attention to your valuables is the best way to be targeted for theft, so tuck expensive pendants into your blouse and spin your ring so that the stone is palm-side. It’ll look like you’re wearing a plain band to others… nothing to steal here!

4. Safe & Secure

Utilize your hotel safe at times you can’t or don’t want to wear your jewelry out. This could be when you’re going to be doing strenuous physical activity or maybe chilling on the beach. Better yet, if you’re skeptical about hotel safes like I am you can opt to bring a luggage lock for your bag, or a personal traveling safe to hide deep within your luggage for extra protection.

5. Get it Insured

Even when you’ve prepared to the nines, life happens and things can still go wrong. This is where jewelry insurance comes in handy to help cover any losses. Do you know if your renters or homeowners insurance covers jewelry, and is it enough to cover the cost of your most valuable pieces? Make sure you get the right kind of coverage before you leave for the holidays. Take a look at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, which offers repair or replacement coverage for loss, theft, damage and mysterious disappearance of jewelry that often goes beyond your typical homeowners and renters insurance. Best part: you’re covered worldwide for all types of jewelry and watches. Better safe than sorry, am I right?
