3 Lipsticks to Wear When Your Lips are Dry

Let’s face it: dry lips and lipsticks usually don’t mix. Adding color over chapped lips typically makes them look and feel much worse. Pigment catches onto dry patches, shine accentuates texture, and flakes become inevitable.

So what do you do when you want to wear a full face of makeup but are struggling with dry lips? First of all, a good hydration and exfoliation is in order. Combine a little olive oil with some brown sugar for a DIY lip scrub that will help smooth texture and replenish moisture. After that, it’s all about choosing the right lipstick.

You’ll want to stick to creamy formulas that won’t dry out your lips and make the problem more obvious. Here are three lip color formulas I like to wear when my lips are dry.

1. NYX Intense Butter Gloss ($6.49)

An obvious choice to reach for when your lips are feeling less than luscious is some lip gloss. I can count the lip gloss formulas I love on one hand, and the NYX Intense Butter Gloss and Original Butter Gloss both make the cut. Not only do they have a cushy and balmy formula, but they have great pigmentation that makes them almost look like a traditional lipstick. You get maximum color and a glossy finish that will not only feel great on dry lips but conceal any patchiness. See swatches and a full review of my small collection here.

2. Physicians Formula The Healthy Lip ($6.99)

Usually you want to avoid matte formulas at all costs if your lips are feeling dry. However, the Physicians Formula Healthy Lip is a creamy liquid lipstick that’s infused with Avocado Oil, Vitamins A & E, Hyaluronic Acid and a blend of oils to help treat dry lips while drenching them in color! The velvet finish is what I would consider soft matte, where it doesn’t look flat or become dry. You get a slight sheen and a comfortable, flexible feel. These shades also last for hours, so this is a great solution if you’re looking for all day wear. See swatches and a full review of all thirteen shades here.

3. Gerard Cosmetics Supreme Lip Creme ($12)

Finally, I’ve actually been reaching for the Gerard Cosmetics Supreme Lip Creme a lot this past summer when my lips feel kinda crusty. It’s a really comfortable mousse-like formula that acts like a hybrid between a lipstick and gloss. The Supreme Lip Creme is creamy and pigmented, and feels super hydrating on the lips. You get opaque color with a high shine finish, and no stickiness in sight! I have the shade Wild Berry Tart as seen above, and it’s a perfect year-round light berry color.
