Covergirl Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipsticks Review

Even though I’ve featured this product in a few makeup tutorials recently, it’s taken me a while to wrap my head around a full review of the Covergirl Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipsticks. Just when I thought I knew how I felt about them after trying a handful of shades, my mind kinda sorta may have changed after finally getting through the rest of the collection. So here’s a heads up, this review is going to be mixed— there are definitely some great characteristics, and some that might drive you batty.

First off, I really do love the shade range with the launch of the Melting Pout Matte liquid lipsticks. We have our staple neutrals but also some unique colors such as gray, blue and deep purple. I think they really give you enough in this collection for any look, whether is a go-to every day vibe or you want to serve up a statement lip.

The formula of these liquid lipsticks are infused with nourishing ingredients and have a gel-cream consistency. It’s super lightweight and thin, though spreads easily and smoothly over the lips. You get a satin-matte finish, where they dry down but don’t look completely flat. Plus, they don’t feel dry or tight on the lips and feel comfortable throughout the day.

So that all sounds good, right? I thought so. When I first delved into this collection, I had solely been wearing the neutral pink shades which I was very happy with. I even wore one as a bridesmaid to a wedding because the lasting power was so impressive! So, what was the catch?

Let’s just get into swatches first!

Coral Chronicles is indeed a coral shade but with a softer vibe that can be worn year round.

I love Current Nude, which is a bit of a grey pink.

All Nighter is a classic blue-toned red.

Seismic

One of the statement shades, Seismic is an electric purple.

Gray Matter

Gray Matter is a straight up cool gray shade, that is incredibly unique and pretty in my opinion, though hard to get full coverage color with.

Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost is a super 90s brown color.

Supermodel

Supermodel is an enticing blue, but here you can see my struggles to get it to apply evenly.

Back Talk

Back Talk is a beautiful blackened plum shade, but unfortunately again was hard to get a smooth coverage with.

Never Say Never

Finally, we have Never Say Never, which is supposed to be an oxblood shade but applies patchy and so you can never really see the color in its glory.

From the swatches, you can probably tell what my main problem with the lipsticks were. Turns out, these lipsticks don’t apply completely opaque. You can’t really tell with the lighter neutral shades, since there’s not a lot of contrast between the color and my lips. In fact, I absolutely love the first four shades swatched here— they’re go-tos in my every day looks. But when you start moving into the darker or bolder shades, the streakiness and patchiness is apparent. I tried everything: applying thin layers and building up, applying one thicker layer, letting the layer completely dry down for several minutes before adding more to fill in streaks… and I just couldn’t get a super even coverage with the darker shades. In fact, when you try to layer the shade, you get sort of a dry erase effect where the applicator picks up the color you already put down. It’s frustrating, because this happens mostly with these dark and unique shades that you may not be able to find in other collections, and the ones that may have inspired you to make a purchase in the first place.

With that said, the shades to avoid include Back Talk, Gray Matter, Supermodel, Never Say Never and Paradise Lost. The other ones apply with more forgiveness because their translucency doesn’t stand out as much. And with the remaining shades, you can appreciate how comfortable and pretty this formula is, and the lasting power! As I said, I wore Coral Chronicles for a wedding and it lasted from 1pm to 11pm with dinner and lots of champagne in between!

So yes, my feelings are mixed, because I really do love wearing these in the “safe” shades, but the unique ones were such a disappointment (with the exception of Seismic). I’ll say this: if you want an affordable liquid lipstick you can trust to last through special occasions or busy days, it’s definitely worth picking up. They also don’t accentuate the lines in my lips, rather they smooth over them. They’re only $7.99 at Ulta Beauty.

Have you tried any of the new Covergirl Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipsticks?

  1. Lots of wins but also plenty of misses with this collection. Matte is a hard finish to pull off, especially with a lipstick.

  2. Oh how crazy! I also love the softer shades, so I’m glad they worked out but the more intense/deeper shades… wth! Why would CoverGirl even put them out when they are so patchy and uneven.

  3. I really love Secret and All Nighter. Thanks for doing an in depth review! I had no idea Covergirl made these.

  4. I love Secret and Coral Chronicles! But that’s so disappointing with the darker colors. I don’t usually opt for bold lips, but anyone who does would be in for a big disappointment. At least the neutrals work well!

  5. Why did Never Say Never have to be so patchy?! That shade is gorgeous and one I do not have in my collection. Like you, I liked the look of the “safe” shades though.

  6. I’ve often found that dark shades in liquid lipstick apply patchy, boo hoo. But so many of those shades were gorgeous

  7. I was really impressed the first few swatches but those darker colors look patchy. I adore your style of photo with the lippie!

  8. Current Nude & Secret are my top 2 in this collection! I wish I could tolerate mattes because I LOVE the look of them.
