Four Hair Hacks to Get Fuller Hair Fast
Updated for 2020.
Full, voluminous hair never goes out of style. If you’re not blessed with natural volume, it can be hard to get that glamorous vibe. I’m personally not a fan of backcombing— or “teasing”— the hair, since it can cause breakage, tangles and damage. Luckily, there are other ways to fake it till you make it.
Keep reading to discover how to get fuller hair with just a few tweaks to your routine.
1. Try Texturizing Spray
Using texturizing spray gives your hair more of a “lived in” feel, with more grip for easy styling as well as more lift and volume. The Sexy Hair High Tide Texturizing Finishing Spray gives hair buildable volume and hold with up to 24 hours of humidity resistance. It also helps maintain your hair’s natural shine.
If you don’t have a texturizing spay on hand, you can also use dry shampoo! On top of absorbing excess oil on the scalp, it will add texture at the root for slight lift as well. Try to find a dry shampoo that doesn’t leave visible residue, like the Dove Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo.
I will tend to use texturizing spray on cleaner hair, and switch to dry shampoo throughout the week as my hair gets dirtier and I can benefit from the oil control.
2. Switch to Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner
If you’re really dedicated to maintaining a thicker feeling head of hair, try switching to a thickening shampoo and conditioner. For a prescription-free option, check out the Derma E Thickening Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner. The shampoo contains eucalyptus extract which may help to support healthy hair texture and growth, plus spearmint extract to cool and nourish the scalp. The conditioner compliments the shampoo with willow bark extract to exfoliate the scalp, as well as peppermint extract for extra growth support. The nutrient-rich blend of protein, vitamins and essential oils help stimulate the hair and reduce thinning. It’s vegan, cruelty-free and safe for color treated hair.
3. Crimp Your Hair
If you want dramatic volume without using a ton of styling products, this technique is for you. All you need is a crimping iron. Pin away the top layers of your hair, which we will keep smooth, and crimp the next layer of hair close to the roots all the way around your head. You can repeat under every other layer of hair, depending on how much fullness you want. When you let down your top layers, they will be lifted and your hair will have va-va-voom volume!
4. Blow Out & Under
If you’re blow drying your hair, it’s easy to achieve volume with one little trick. After blowdrying in the typical downwards direction, instead of moving on to the next section, give the same layer a little blast from underneath the hair. Be sure to point the concentrator nozzle near your root. This is like a much gentler version of “backcombing” without having to deal with the knots later. Remember to use a round brush, which will maximize volume and shape. Alternatively, you could use a round brush-style blow dryer which will have the same effect.
Dry Shampoo is my favorite way of faking short term volume and the Dove is my favorite one so far.
I’m ALL about texture spray/powders!
My hair is too thin for crimping. I love Viviscal supplements and am on autobuy for them.
Visical is amazing! I have to use a root lifter. Another tip is after blowing your hair dry–use the cool button to more volume–it lasts longer that way too.
I like to blow out and under.
I def need to try crimping, I have a lot of hair but it sits sooo flat!
