2015 MTV VMAs Beauty Trend Forecast

I’m very excited to be joining CoverGirl this weekend at the 2015 MTV VMAs— a serious dream come true! We kicked off the festivities with a trend panel at LURE Nightclub in Hollywood on Thursday. We were joined by Tori Kelly, Nicole Richie, Amanda Steele (MakeupByMandy24), celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey (who has worked on Katy Perry), and MTV style editor Gaby Wilson to chat about their favorite and least favorite beauty trends, as well as what we can expect on the VMAs red carpet this year.

Obviously, dramatic lashes are a huge part of any red carpet look to keep the eyes looking open, bright, and hypnotizing. Whether or not you’ll be in front of the camera this weekend, Jake suggests the CoverGirl Super Sizer Mascara to coat each lash with extra volume. I mentioned this mascara in my Summer Favorites post and I’m still using it constantly in this LA heat. I love how it really holds a curl, which Jake agrees is extremely important for long-wear looks.

Jake always uses a lash curler as close to the base of the eyelashes as possible so they’ll stay open and luscious for hours. Nicole’s personal trick is heating her curler with a blast of hot air from her blow dryer first… although the effect lasts her eight hours, she says to use her tidbit with caution as she’s definitely burned herself once or twice.

Across the board, everyone agreed that they’re over a heavily caked-on face. Whether it’s a no-makeup makeup look, or a fresh face paired with a dramatic eye or lip, it’s all about keeping the skin looking natural. Jake had used the CoverGirl Clean Liquid Makeup Foundation on Nicole before the panel, and she was glowing and looking flawless. She admitted that one look she’d love to try is a bold, black lip with slicked back hair and a fresh-faced foundation. Now that’s something I’d love to see! Tori’s off-duty look consists of simply tinted moisturizer, as long as her brows are on point.

The cat eye will never not be seen on the red carpet, and Amanda promises that practice makes perfect. Jake adds that you should practice any new beauty technique when you have nowhere to go, or when you’re just having a girl’s night in. That way, if you mess up, it doesn’t matter! He said the cat eye is Katy Perry’s favorite look, and he has been using the CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Liner which offers control for both thin and thick lines.

What can you pair with a classic cat eye? A bold lip, of course. On the red carpet, the stars need color that won’t fade. Jake uses the CoverGirl Outlast Longwear + Moisture Lipstick on his clients (most recently, Selena Gomez) when he needs a bold color that will look good through the end of the after party. Nicole says that she’s really feeling orange lips right now. Maybe we’ll see some on Sunday!

The most important thing to bring to the red carpet? All panelists agreed that confidence was the number one element that will really bring the beauty. “It’s all about being true to yourself,” said Nicole. Rocking a look that makes you feel fierce in your own face is key to channelling your most beautiful you.

Overall, we were told to expect the unexpected. While these trends are classic, there’s always an element of surprise since many celebs use the VMAs to push beauty and fashion boundaries.
