5 Ways to Use Dry Shampoo (and My Current Favorite)
Post sponsored by Lunchbox but all opinions are my own. Seriously, I love this stuff.
When I discovered dry shampoo a few years back, my head nearly exploded. Where the HECK was this all my life? So many bad hair days could have been avoided, so many styles saved. It immediately became one of those beauty products I never dare run out of.
Dry shampoo is so much more than it seems— there are actually a ton of different ways to use it that make it a must-have in every beauty arsenal. But, finding the best dry shampoo can be tricky. I personally look for those that that never leaves white residue behind, preferably one that smells great, and is lightweight.
I only recently started using the new Dove Refresh+Care Dry Shampoo but it’s already the one I’m stockpiling for when I run out. First and foremost, the spray applies completely invisible. As someone with dark hair and dandruff, this is the number one thing I need in a dry shampoo. It also smells sweet and refreshing, which is great when I’m using it on 3- or 4- day hair (don’t judge). Lastly, while it adds texture and volume, it simultaneously gives my mane a light feeling as it absorbs the oil weighing my hair down. All in all, the Dove Dry Shampoo is perfect, and they even sell them in a 3 pack at Sam’s Club so I can hoard them even easier.
How do I use dry shampoo? Let me educate ya’ll.
1. Refresh
The most obvious way to use dry shampoo is to refresh oily, limp hair on days when you don’t want to wash it. Dry shampoo absorbs oil and gives you a freshly-washed scent so you can prolong your style (or just avoid washing) for another day or so. Since I have miserably dry ends, I only wash my hair about twice a week. Dry shampoo helps me keep my roots looking and feeling clean.
2. Add Texture
On the flip side, you dry shampoo can actually help out clean hair, too! Sometimes clean hair can be hard to style because it’s slippy, especially with braids. Using dry shampoo can help add texture and grip back into your hair so they hold styles better. I particularly like the Dove dry shampoo for this, because it adds texture while still leaving your hair soft.
3. Add Volume
I’ve been using dry shampoo for this the most lately— whether my hair is clean or dirty, I always spritz some dry shampoo on to boost volume without having to backcomb or add heavy product. It gives it just the right amount of lift while still looking natural and feeling weightless.
4. Make Bobby Pins Stick
Here’s a great beauty hack for you! If you’re having trouble getting a bobby pin to stay in place, spray it with a little dry shampoo and it should stick still! This is especially handy for thin hair, which tends to have this problem a lot.
5. Keep Curls Casual
If you’re looking for more natural looking, piece-y curls, spray a thin layer of dry shampoo all over after curling your hair with an iron, then finger comb through the curls once they’ve cooled down. The dry shampoo keeps them from clumping up into sausage curls and in turn also gives your hair extra body.
I love Dove – it is one of my favorite lines, especially for deodorant. So I really need to try this one out. I only wash my hair 1 to 2x a week or it gets really dry so I like dry shampoo… I will love this one.
I think I need this Dry Shampoo!
I like dry shampoo too so I’m checking out this one next time
I love dry shampoo but haven’t tried this one yet!
I love using dry shampoo as a texturizer for my fine hair. Works like a charm!
I rarely use dry shampoo but I have some. I don’t love the fragrance usually.
I need dry shampoo for both volume and texture with my fine hair.
Making bobby pins stick and adding texture are both ways I like to use it.
Great tips! I have done the texture trick for girls with fine hair and works so well!
I love dry shampoo but I need to try this one!! The crazy LA weather is making my skin/scalp so dry so flakies are upon me and I absolutely need an invisible one. Thanks for the rec!
Dry shampoo is such a life-saver, especially when I end up using too much product and over-grease.
Ohhh, I like the bobby pins trick!!!
I never got along with dry shampoo when my hair was really long. I just got it cut (it was almost down to my butt), so I’m going to give them a try again. Thanks for the tips!
Ah I love that feeling of weightlessness when you chop off a TON of hair. Definitely check this out as you’ll probably experience a lot of changes in texture or moisture now that you’ve got such a drastic cut!
I have a can of dry shampoo that’s been sitting here for a couple of months because I still haven’t used it. I’ve gotta take the plunge
I’m still in search for a good dry shampoo, I’m normally a batiste girl but this sounds amazing. My hair even with batiste isn’t the greatest, never does it’s job by keeping oil at bay. I’m one of those that I need to wash my hair everyday, wish I didn’t have to I dye my hair red it would be helpful. Such a great post

You know, you’re actually probably making your hair oilier by washing your hair everyday– your body is trying to make up for the oil you’re stripping during daily washes. Although it will feel REALLY gross at first, you should try going several days without washing your hair for about a month. The oil production should even out and you’ll have more normal hair!
I did about 2-3 months with out washing my hair I did every 2-3 days and it was so gross. Never saw a change even with being a whole month, it just got worse. I can’t use hydration shampoos’ or the same shampoo back to back, by half way through the day my hair will be so greasy it looks wet.
Katie, I dye my hair auburn/red as well, and I learned from my hairstylist that red is the haircolor that washes out/fades the easiest. She suggested that I use a low-suds shampoo and only wash my hair twice a week – three times max – to protect the color integrity. It’s also helping my split ends. Dry shampoo saves me and my hair!
Yes! Also avoid sulfates (which make shampoos sudsy) because they are a stripping agent that will strip not only oil, but your color.
