4 Ways to Use the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
One of the biggest revolutions in makeup application in recent years has got to be the return of the sponge: and I’m not talking about the rough triangle sponges. No, I’m talking about the bouncy, typically tear-drop shaped sponges that help apply makeup like a dream. Well, if you find a quality one, that is.
Here’s the thing though, because of the nature of sponges, they should be replaced about every four months or so. If you’re shelling out $20 for the one everyone swears is the best, that could add up quickly.
So when I saw that the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge was about five bucks, I had to put it to the test. After working it into my routine for the first time, I was immediately sold. It became a staple tool for me, especially because it can get so many jobs done!
Here are four ways you can use this the Real Techniques sponge in your makeup routine.
1. Flat Side: Foundation
This sponge has something most don’t: a flat edge! I use this feature to apply my foundation. It’s able to cover a lot of surface area at once, and the top edge helps get product into every corner, like around the nose or along the hairline.
2. Round Side: Blush
To get a soft and diffused look, the round side is perfect for applying cream blush. I especially like using it for super pigmented products, like this Creme to Powder Blush in Pink Peony by Sleek Makeup. It’s a gorgeous bright pink, but it is so easy to apply way too much. Dabbing the sponge into the blush, then onto my face gives me more control for an every day look.
3. Pointed Tip: Concealer
The sponge’s point is perfect for dotting and blending concealer, either on blemishes or my favorite: under the eyes. I’ll dab a bit of Pixi’s Correction Concentrate in Brightening Peach under my eyes with my fingers, then use the point to blend it out. I find that I get way less creasing doing this.
4. Sharp Edge: Contour
I only just discovered this way to use the sponge, and I can’t believe I haven’t heard of more people doing it. For a really defined contour, dab the edge of the flat side into your bronzer, then line it up with the bottom of your cheekbone. Press the product onto the skin, then you can use
the round side (that’s not covered in blush) to blend it out.

Just like with any makeup sponge, using this one while it’s damp will enhance application and keep it from absorbing too much product.
You can find the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge for around $5 in drugstores, and anywhere you can buy Real Techniques brushes. It’s currently buy-one-get-one 50% off at ULTA!
I have to try this sponge. I love your makeup here
I love the RT sponge. If I use it for my foundation, I’ll also use it for my setting powder. If I get too much, I can just use a fan brush to flick away the excess, but it really does look airbrushed!
That’s so affordable. I hope it’s still on sale when I need to order one of the 21 Days of Beauty specials.
Wow, what a great multi purpose tool AND it’s affordable!
I really need to give this sponge a try. Also, I demand a tutorial on your eye makeup in that last pic – BEAUTIFUL!!!! <3
These are the best drug store beauty sponges I’ve tried so far. I bought two when they first came out, and I’m still using them. They have a really nice shape. I got them in a two-pack from Target online, and paid less than half of what a BB would have cost. Plus, I really like the flat angle on these.
I wanted to like the RT sponge but mine fell apart so fast! A few uses and washes and it was in the trash and I was back to my Beauty Blenders.
Great tips! I love this makeup sponge, but I still think the bb is better (and I’ve tried every alternative out there, this one is my 2nd favorite).
I really like these sponges, for drugstore you can’t beat them.
OMG You look amazing! FINALLY something affordable that’s better than my bb!
This is awesome! Love multifunctional beauty tools!
Great uses. I have been meaning to pick this up actually.
Ive been debating about this one for a while now, but I do like my cheap little make up wedges. I may have to look into this myself though, the issue i have with them is you can’t clean to the middle of them and it breaks down. With them being so pricey in Canada don’t think I wanna be throwing out $10 after this gets gross
