2 Months on the Helix Mattress: Review

A couple months ago, Adam and I moved into our first house and basically started from scratch when it came to furniture. We tossed out pretty much all of our college stuff— most of it we had owned for far too long or it was mismatched due to Craigslist deals. One of the biggest decisions we knew we’d be making boiled down to our bed. We were dying to get a king sized mattress, and needed something that would cater to both of our sleeping needs.

We did a lot of research before taking the plunge. To save on cost, we definitely wanted to check out the new “mail order mattress” trend that’s hot right now. Funny enough, that didn’t exactly narrow down our options. There are so many companies out there… it was hard to figure out what was right for us. Then, we discovered Helix.

Helix was the only company that offered customized mattresses. This sounded like a dream— we could tell them exactly what we wanted and they’d design a mattress for us! It all starts with a quiz where they ask you questions like What position do you sleep in? Do you get hot at night? Do you have broad shoulders or broad hips? From there, they rearrange the layers in the mattress for maximum personalized comfort.

What I thought was particularly cool was that they keep couples in mind. Both Adam and I were able to take the quiz in tandem with our own answers. You can choose to create a mattress with blended comfort, where it balances your needs throughout the mattress, or customize separate sides of the bed to make it even more perfect for you. We decided to go with the blended mattress because when one of us is hanging out in bed, we like to spread out.

Once it arrived, it took about ten minutes to unbox and another hour for it to regain its shape. then, it was ready for use! As soon as we jumped in, we could feel the support immediately. This is our first foam mattress, and it felt so different from spring! The foam conforms to your body and you feel almost like you’re floating.

The brand says that it can take up to 30 days to break the bed in. The first few weeks, the bed felt pretty firm. It was comfortable, but considering our customization options indicated it would be a medium-soft feel, the initial feel was a bit surprising. As a side sleeper, I need a lot of sinkage so that my shoulder and arm doesn’t go numb during the night.

It’s now been two months, and I personally feel that while my side has softened up a bit, it’s still too firm to sleep on my side. Adam, being heavier than I am, has pretty much completely broken in his side and says it’s perfect for him. I think because we went with the blended mattress, the support needed for a big man resulted in more firmness that my smaller frame can’t quite break in as easily. I’ve asked him to hang out on my side of the bed when he can to help break it in more. With that said, I have absolutely no problems sleeping on my back in the Helix. There’s really no bad position with this mattress— the way it contours to my body ensures the best sleep I’ve had.

On top of that, we’ve both been sleeping much cooler. Being new to Las Vegas, the heat really threw us for a loop. In this mattress, we don’t have to blast the air all night though! We keep it on 74 and nobody’s sweating in the morning. This was a very important aspect, since Adam is a furnace while sleeping. He’s reported absolutely no issues!

Overall, we are very happy with our Helix. It’s the best mattress either of us have ever owned, and I look forward to getting into bed every night. (It’s also really hard to get out in the morning because I’m so comfy!) I highly recommend it if you’ve been looking for the best mattress for you and your partner to both get amazing sleep.
