Too Faced Melted Matte-tallics Lipsticks Review

I’ve mentioned before once or twice that metallic lipsticks aren’t really my jam. Maybe it’s because my lips have too many lines on them, but there have been less than I can count on one hand that I feel actually look good on me. I think the look is also very editorial and not necessarily something the majority of people feel they can get away with wearing on a day to day basis. Yet, the trend is still going very strong as seen by the new Too Faced Melted Matte-tallic Lipstick launch.

The original Too Faced Melted Lipsticks have been some of my favorite on the high-end spectrum since they were released. So when this new metallic matte version recently dropped, I decided I wanted to give them a fair shot. There are several neutral shades that I could definitely see being more “wearable” than your average metallic, and then of course some bold hues thrown in for a more daring look. The brand said they are supposed to have a velvety matte formula and a brushed metal finish that dries down matte for a 25-hour wear that’s transfer p and kiss-proof.

What also caught my eye about this collection was the inclusion of a “Magic Metal Transformer” which can be worn on top of any of the shades to turn it holographic. Yeah, I was intrigued alright.

As with most of the newer Melted lipstick launches, these are in the plastic tubes with the wand applicator, instead of the squeeze tube packaging of the product’s past. I’m totally in favor of this packaging as, just as you saw if you watched my lipstick declutter video, the squeeze tube/soft tip packaging had an annoying tendency to clog up and get crusty.

Let’s take a look at all thirteen shades in this collection. I’ve swatched each shade on their own, and topped with the Magic Metal Transformer.

Melted Matte-tallic Sugar Kisses

This nude pink paired with the soft metallic finish gives me major 90s frosty lips vibes! I wasn’t a fan of how it paired with the Magic Metal Transformer, which made it look a little too crunchy.

Melted Matte-tallic Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk is a subtle peachy nude. I thought this was one of the better pairings with the Magic Metal Transformer, which added an ultra shiny look to it.

Melted Matte-tallic Our Lips are Sealed

Our Lips Are Sealed is a coral pink with a gold metallic sheen to it. This is another that I didn’t feel looked flattering once topped with the transformer.

Melted Matte-tallic Faking It

Faking It is one of the more wearable shades in my opinion, being a warm beige.

Melted Matte-tallic Breakup, Makeup

Breakup, Makeup is a cool petal pink that I’ll admit, looks great topped with the transformer.

I’m loving the cool greige shade that is You Better Work! It gives me a sophisticated grunge feel.

Melted Matte-tallic Bitch, I’m Too Faced

Bitch, I’m Too Faced is a beautiful metallic red that would look amazing around the holidays, or just to make a statement year round. I think the transformer takes away from the look in this case, and the colors didn’t quite go together.

Melted Matte-tallic I Dare You

Another shade I’d rock on a typical night out, this deep fuchsia really pops. With the transformer, you get this galactic look that’s pretty headturning.

Melted Matte-tallic I Wanna Rock With You

This might be my favorite shade in the collection. I Wanna Rock With You is a purple-leaning burgundy that just stole my heart the minute I swiped it on. I prefer it alone rather than with the transformer.

Melted Matte-tallic Give It To Me

Give It To Me is a true metallic copper– it’s almost as if you copied and pasted the color of a penny! It looks much better alone and is a truly unique shade.

Melted Matte-tallic Caffeine Queen

I really like this cool brown that has a little bit of a red undertone to it. Again, much better alone.

Melted Matte-tallic Scream My Name

Totally digging a deep purple lip to match my new hair! I think this one is a wearable bold shade that I can definitely see myself wearing out.

Melted Matte-tallic The Real Teal

Another favorite, I love The Real Teal because it’s truly not a shade you see every day. Unfortunately I just could not get it to mesh with the transformer.

As you can see, we have a great shade range and beautiful coverage. The formula is much thinner than the original Melted lipsticks, but still feel very smooth and feel more lightweight. Out of all the metallic lipsticks I’ve tried, I’d say these accentuated my lip lines the least when worn alone.

However, I would say that the matte metallic finish is actually inconsistent. Some shades, such as I Wanna Rock With You and Give It To Me are obviously show-stoppers with a strong reflective finish, while others like Pillow Talk are more like a satin vibe. Here’s the thing, I don’t actually mind the ones that are more satin-y, because they still dry down like mattes.

In regards to the Magic Metal Transformer, let’s just get one thing straight. It’s not holographic. It’s more of a purple/pink chrome shift. For that reason, I don’t think it actually matches well with all the shades. In my opinion, it looks best on top of Breakup, Makeup and I Dare You. The transformer also makes the lips feel a bit uncomfortable with more of a heavy and dry feeling, and it definitely brings out those lip lines. It basically adds a high concentration of glitter particles on top of the lips and it just doesn’t feel great when applied over the entire lip area. Plus, sometimes the transformer would smear the original shade underneath and make it look patchy (like above with The Real Teal!).

As for the wear time, you can get hours of wear with this… if you’re not eating. Each time I ate, I had very visible fading that needed to be touched up. But there was no transferring from light sipping on a water bottle, so there’s that. I feel like I get better wear time from the original Melted lipsticks.

Overall, I think the must-haves in this collection are the unique shades: Give It To Me, I Wanna Rock With You, The Real Teal and maybe even Scream My Name. It’s worth the splurge if you don’t have any shades like this already in your collection and you’re looking to add something a little different than your run-of-the-mill colors. As for the more neutral or traditional shades, you can find something similar at the drugstore.

You can find the new Too Faced Melted Matte-tallic Lipsticks for $21 at Sephora.

What’s your stance on metallic lipsticks? How do you feel about these new ones?

  1. I’m usually not a fan of metallic lipsticks for the sane reason, although your swatches are making me want to try a few of these out especially Pillow Talk and Faking It.
