NYX Butter Gloss & Intense Butter Gloss Review
Spring is one of the best season to play up the lip shades. Anything goes— from nude shades to intense brights, you can work a lot of different colors into spring makeup looks effortlessly. When I want an easy pop of color, whether subtle or dramatic, I’ve been reaching for the NYX Butter Glosses a lot recently.
Yep, it’s embarrassing that it actually took me this long to try one of the brand’s cult products. I’ve been obsessed with their Matte Lip Creams for a couple years now, and you all know I’m not really a gloss girl anyway. But I grabbed five of the shades when I was at Generation Beauty back in January, and they’ve been an arm’s reach away ever since.
My personal little collection is actually a mix of the classic Butter Glosses and the newer Intense Butter Glosses, which have slightly different formulas but both deliver moisturizing, pigmented color. The NYX Butter Glosses have a very cushy and balmy formula that’s not sticky in the slightest. The color is strong for a gloss, but still retains a bit of translucency. You can build up the color for more of a pop, but won’t get 100% opacity with most of the shades.
The NYX Intense Butter Glosses, on the other hand, have much more of a liquid lipstick formula. They’re less glossy and more creamy, but have a thin enough consistency to feel lighter than a lipstick. As their “intense” name suggests, they are also more pigmented and can give you full coverage color with one layer. They stay very glossy looking throughout the day and are hydrating on the lips.
Eclair
Eclair is a beautiful ballerina pink that I love when I just want a hint of color, but nothing flashy.
Sunday Mimosa
Sunday Mimosa is another nude shade, but with more of a peachy tone to it. I’ve been using it the most for no-makeup makeup looks. It’s also the most opaque of the classic Butter Glosses I own.
Sugar Plum
Sugar Plum makes lavender on the lips completely wearable, and lets you step out of the box without going too bold.
Summer Fruit
Summer Fruit is a gorgeous bright coral that makes a flirty and fun statement.
Cherry Custard
Possibly my favorite of the five shades I have, Cherry Custard is a cool classic red.
Another difference between the Butter Gloss and Intense Butter Gloss is the wands. The Butter Gloss has the familiar angled applicator, while the Intense Butter Gloss has a flat, rounded edge. I almost wish these were reversed, since I feel like I have more control with the angled tip and the Intense shades are more pigmented.
With both versions, you get an average wear time when it comes to gloss— about 3 hours with the regular shades and maybe 4 with the Intense colors. Both will transfer, and will also require reapplication after a meal.
You can easily tell the glosses apart by their caps (the Intense shades have a silver tops). Also, the NYX Butter Gloss is only $4.99 while the NYX Intense Butter Gloss is $5.99— still both so cheap, you can afford to indulge in a few!
Sugar plum is my favorite
I need to try some of the Intense ones… though that lavender gloss is kinda calling to me!
What pretty colors. The red is especially attractive on you.
I never paid attention to these, but you made me want to buy a couple. So gorgeous!
I have a bunch of these that I got from ipsy bags, and I love them. Now I just have to find them. Love how they look on you
These are such pretty Spring-y shades. They are nicely pigmented as well!
I have about 6 or 7 of the butter glosses and now the Intense Summer Fruit and Cherry Custard will be mine!
I’m very mad at myself that I haven’t tried any of these yet! They look so amazing!
I love both versions, but I’m a little more partial to the Intense versions. I think both types are really nice drug store lip glosses.
I am too, Rachel! I like the texture more.
I love NYX lip products. They are my go to drugstore brand!
Great review! I haven’t tried either of these yet… but I do like the Liquid Suede that just came out. Have you tried those yet?
I haven’t, but I’m dying to… I gotta see if my local Ulta Beauty has restocked them!
