2014 is the year of the chubby lip pencils, and I ain’t even mad about it! Later this month I’m going to do a small roundup of drugstore chubby lip pencils, but today I’m talking about the new Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain Moisturizing Lip Colors. These appeared at my local Rite Aid on New Years Eve when Wet n Wild was BOGO 50% off, PLUS they each had $1.00 off coupons attached to them! Regularly retailing at $1.99 each, these are certainly one of the cheaper lip pencils, even on the drugstore scene. I picked up the colors Red-dy or Not and Lady and the Vamp.
Red-dy or Not is a strawberry red color, great for every day.
Lady and the Vamp is a berry plum shade with very small shimmer particles, which don’t translate much to the lips.
Both of these pencils start out rather sheer, and can be built up for medium opacity. They glide on smoothly and feel very moisturizing on the lips. I love that the color doesn’t seep into my lip lines. I wore Lady and the Vamp during a Korean BBQ dinner on New Years Eve, expecting the color to vanish after the meal. When I checked my compact after eating, I literally let out a “Holy crap!” because my lips were still covered in color, when usually after eating I’m left with only an outline of color.
The Megaslicks Balm Stains stain your lips evenly, and the color lasts about 4 hours. While Red-dy or Not’s stain is true to the color that is first applied, the stain from Lady and the Vamp is much lighter than the original shade. Lady and the Vamp applies as a plum berry shade, but the stain it leaves behind is a lighter red-berry shade. Quite odd… and unfortunate if the original shade is what pulls your look together.
I’m a huge fan of the packaging of these pencils– not only are they completely enclosed in a safety seal in store, but the lid SNAPS shut. It makes me feel at ease that it won’t open when rustling around in my purse.
Overall, for $1.99 the Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stains are a fantastic and extremely affordable choice to expand your chubby lip pencil collection. The color lasts just as long as other chubby lip pencils I’ve tried, and they are super comfortable to wear on the lips. I’m not sure how long they’ll include the $1 Off coupon on the packaging, so go and pick out at least a couple shades to play around with!
Have you tried these balm stains? How do you think they measure up to other drugstore pencils?
