A couple weeks ago, Colour Pop broke the internet with their release of the Ultra Matte Lips. Everyone was freaking out, trying to get their shades of choice and check out before they all sold out— which they did in a matter of hours. I was a wreck trying to get at least three shades… I even filled out my address incorrectly during the chaos which is why it’s taken me a while to get this up #fail.

Despite the frenzy, I was able to order three awesome shades, and the struggle was totally worth it. The Colour Pop Ultra Matte Lips have a thin formula, but don’t be fooled. These are extremely pigmented and will drench your lips in opaque color with one swipe.
The three shades I managed to land in my cart were Donut, Bumble and Trap.
Donut is a beautiful bright peach that’s very summery.
Bumble is a deep terra cotta.
Trap is the a very on-trend griege shade that has slightly purple undertones.
I had been on the hunt for this kind of shade forever and this one fits the bill perfectly!
Right off the bat, you can feel the liquid formula adhering to your lips. It sets in just about a minute, and after that it will be smudge, budge, and feather proof. With that said, the thin and tapered doe foot applicator makes it easy to apply precisely exactly where you want it.
So, it should be no surprise that these are matte. Super matte. ULTRA matte. I mean, it’s in the name. Exfoliating and hydrating your lips prior to wearing these will help them look and perform their best. What’s interesting, though, is that these don’t actually feel incredibly drying or uncomfortable like matte lipsticks get a bad rap for. Granted, they aren’t moisturizing in the least bit, but the lip balm junkie in me didn’t go crazy and my lips generally felt like I wasn’t wearing anything all day. As someone who cannot stand dry lips in the least, this was the biggest thing I was worried about, then relieved about.
Something to note: I would not suggest you try applying multiple layers of this product— nor should you really have to. Spread the amount that naturally comes out on the brush all over the lips. I promise you you’ll be able to cover everything— then pick up just a little more to fill in any light spaces. If you start layering this on too thick, you risk it looking cakey.
Now, let’s talk staying power, because what’s the use of a pretty lippy if it doesn’t last? Let’s let Bumble do the talking:
I literally let out a “WOAH” when there was hardly any change in my lip color after an orange, a sandwich, chips, and many glasses of water. There was a little fading toward the middle, but nothing that would warrant a touch up. In fact, the color lasted a full 8 hours with very minimal fading/flaking until I had pasta, which finally broke it down. This is no doubt an all day, no muss no fuss lip color. I’m in love.
I’ve found that the easiest way to remove these are with coconut oil, which will also offer some super hydration to your lips.
Overall, the Colour Pop Ultra Matte Lip is more comfortable, more smudge proof, and more long wearing than similar products I’ve tried, even from high end brands (ahem… Velvetines). Not to mention, they’re $6 each— a steal for the quality you’re getting, as usual with Colour Pop. Once they’re back in stock (which will be the first week of August according to the brand’s Instagram), I suggest you grab up what you can quickly!
