I’ve been on the hunt to add more color to my eyeshadow collection after purging a lot of really old makeup palettes. During their last Hautelook event, I decided to invest in the BH Cosmetics Malibu Platte from their California Collection. I figured, as a born-and-raised Californian myself, I needed to own one of these palettes! Malibu is the place to be during spring and summer break, so I couldn’t resist adding it to my basket.
All of the California palettes come with 16 eyeshadows and four face powders. The colors in the Malibu palette will transport you to the beach– warm, neutral tones with pops of sea blues, sunny yellows, greens and pink. To me, it looked like the best palette out of the three due to the color variety.
The face powders are a generous size. Two are blushes, the other two highlights. The top right blush, my favorite, is such a gorgeous burnt rose shade with a golden sheen. The top left shade is a matte candy pink. The bottom two highlights are right up my alley. They’re not so glittery, but rather add a beautiful glowing sheen wherever applied. All were pigmented and applied very smoothly, I was impressed!
I’ve had good experiences with BH eyeshadows in the past… hell, I wore them to prom! The pigment of the Malibu shadows over my bare skin were weak at first. While the gold and browns were rich, the bold colors I was looking forward to playing with had to be built up with many layers, and still faded throughout the day over primer.

Luckily, the colors really popped and stayed in place when applied over a base; I tested this over both the Bellapierre Makeup Base, and the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pure Nude. Using a cream eyeshadow or even an eyeliner as a base will really make these colors stand out. Although I wish they were as bold on their own, at least I know there’s an easy way to get them to work for me.

As I mentioned before, what really drew me to this palette was the versatility. There are enough neutrals to create simple, every day eyes, as well as a super colorful eye-catching look. I think it’s pretty suitable for traveling for, especially since it folds up into a 4×4 inch square.
All in all, with a little tinkering, this palette delivers fun and functionality. Now I’ve just got to step out of my comfort zone and start creating some creative eye looks. Here’s one I came up with:
While the full price of the BH Cosmetics Malibu Palette is listed at $18.95, it’s discounted on their website almost 100% of the time, hovering around $8.95. This is a really great price for the amount of product you’re getting- especially the face powders. I’d say it was worth it!
