How to Make Your Makeup Last

Although this is one of the most exciting times of the year, it’s also the most stressful. Tying up loose ends at both work and school, making sure you have the perfect gift for every person… I’m pretty sure the last thing you want to be worrying about is touching up your makeup during holiday events. I’m going to take you through some easy prep work you can incorporate into your beauty routine to make sure your makeup lasts.

    Prime Time
One of the best ways to keep your face makeup in place all day is to use a primer underneath your foundation. Primers give your foundation something to adhere to without seeping into your pores and fine lines. This will make for a more smooth finish as well as longer wearing face makeup. Currently, I’ve been using the L’Oreal Revitalift Miracle Blur, which doubles as sunscreen. For a more affordable alternative, check out the e.l.f. Mineral Infused Face Primer, which has been said to be a dupe for the famous Smashbox Photo Finish Primer! Not only should you apply primer for your face makeup, but also to your eyelids as a base for your eyeshadow. My favorite and most affordable primer is the original e.l.f. Eyelid Primer in Sheer.

    Waterproof Eyes
Let’s face it: although it may be a pain to remove, waterproof makeup can last hours longer than other makeup. Whether it be a waterproof mascara (better at holding curl), or waterproof eyeliner (won’t smudge as easily), waterproof options are the way to go when you want an all day and all night eye makeup look.

    Tame Your Brows
I am always so embarrassed when I find out that I’ve been walking around with wonky brows for a whole day! You know… when all the hairs have been nudged in different directions. I try to make it a point to always use brow gel to keep them in place. If you don’t have brow gel on hand, you can always spray a bit of hairspray onto a Q-tip and run it over your eyebrows! This will also help set any brow powder or pencil you may have used to fill them in.

Lipliner is a Girl’s Best Friend
I am always stressing about how my lipstick looks because I tend to rub my lips together incessantly, and I’m always sipping on something. Lip liner has become my secret weapon for keeping my lipstick where it belongs. Coloring in the entirety of your lips with the liner prior to applying lipstick will help it last longer by working like a primer. Using lip liner will also help you avoid the horrid feathering that happens when lipsticks creep out of the confinements of your lips, making for quite a Joker-esque look! Yipes!

    Setting Powder and Blotting Sheets
As a finishing touch, opt for either setting spray or setting powder (aka translucent powder) to lock your makeup in place. I highly recommend the e.l.f. Translucent Powder, or the NYX Long Lasting Makeup Setting Sprays, which come in both a Matte and Dewy finish. Blotting sheets (which are waxy tissues coated in translucent powder) will help you spot-treat any oily areas that pop up throughout the night without compromising your flawless finish.

    1. Thanks for sharing these tips! I’m also starting to get into the long-lasting makeup, so I’m slowly but steadily getting rid of all those products that wouldn’t even last an hour, like lip glosses, quick-fading eye shadows etc. I realized that there are long-lasting counterparts for pretty much everything these days, even lip gloss.

    2. For us broads of a “certain age” a clear barrier lip pencil is helpful to prevent lipstick feathering. I depend on mine, especially when enjoying the festive reds, this time of year. 🙂
