Du Yu Kuu Kuu Harajuku?
Can you believe it’s been almost 14 years since Gwen Stefani’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. album? It was her debut solo album and the start of an era. She’s one of my favorite artists and has had quite a year with her ongoing creative projects.
While in recent years, it seems like she may have strayed a little bit from her Harajuku-inspired whimsical looks, she’s still going strong behind the scenes with the launch of her Kuu Kuu Harajuku universe. The characters are channeling some serious Kawaii vibes and can be followed along on their YouTube channel. Just in time for the holidays, the characters now have their own dolls available at Walmart.
I loved re-discovering the Kawaii style, which has become a major trend. It’s known for it’s “cuteness” and all things tiny and bright. Then, I got sucked into a dark hole of Pinterest when I searched Kawaii makeup… and had to create this look.
I modeled my look after the character Music — she’s a fesity, fearless member of the group HJ5. Her signature look is double buns and has this purple cut-crease makeup look. I wanted to try my spin on it, and here’s what I created!
Some of the recurring themes of Kawaii makeup are exaggerating the eyes to fake a larger appearance, bright colors and often little charms or embellishments in the form of doodles.
Here’s how I created my Kawaii makeup look:
- Start with a cream colored base shade.
- Tightline the upper water line with a black gel eyeliner pencil.
- Start your winged eyeliner. Focus the thickness in the middle of your lid.
- For this look, I created three stacked wings to get that doll-eyed look, and drew on the cut crease extending from the top wing.
- Blend a purple shimmer shade above the eyeliner.
- Line the bottom water and lash line with a white gel eyeliner pencil
- Outline the white halfway with your liquid liner.
- Add dramatic lashes
After that, you can let your creativity run free while adding Kawaii doodles with various liquid liner shades: I added a music note, a heart, a star, a diamond, and shimmery polka dots.
Sometimes the Kawaii style can be super over the top but it’s such an expressive culture and a fun one to explore using your favorite mediums— whether that be makeup or fashion!
