How & Why to Use Anti-Aging Skin Care in Your 20s

This post is sponsored by Olay. All opinions my own.

At 24, I’ll admit that aging and wrinkles aren’t at the forefront when I’m curating my skin care routine. I cater to what I currently see in the mirror, which luckily isn’t wrinkles quite yet. (Knock on wood)

However, your 20s is when your skin experiences a decline in antioxidant response, making it more susceptible to free radicals. In the following decades, you start to see fine lines and wrinkles due to decrease in surface skin cell turnover. After that, sagging in response to a decline in skin barrier function. In reality, starting to use anti-aging skin care earlier in life can set you up for great skin down the road.

The piece of advice I always hear from older women and skin care professionals alike is that it’s always easier to prevent than to repair when it comes to aging skin. Especially since I already experience other concerns such as eczema and acne, I want to do everything I can to keep it healthy and vibrant as I age.

So, I’m putting in my dues now and will hopefully reap reward later. Since I’m a sucker for instant gratification, I’m careful in choosing anti-aging skin care that can also help my current skin concerns so that I’m doing double duty.

I’ve always regarded Olay as the best drugstore option for anti-aging skin care. If you’re new to trying out anti-aging products, they are definitely the way to go. Not only is the price point great, but their products usually tackle more than just one skin concern so you can see results right away. The brand just reformulated several of their products to be more effective as ever. Plus, there’s a Target deal going on right now where you can get a $5 gift card when buying two Olay products!

Here are some Olay favorites to start your anti-aging skin care routine:

1. Olay Regenerist Miracle Boost Concentrate ($23.99)

Concentrates, also known as essences in the skin care world, are supercharged formulas that intensify the results of your skin care routine. (Sort of like adding a superfood to your smoothie recipe) They give your skin a big dose of effective ingredients, to be applied before your moisturizer or serum. The Miracle Boost Concentrate works really well paired with the Micro Sculpting Cream, as they deliver key anti-aging ingredients to the skin. It helps increase skin’s absorbency so that the rest of your routine is maximized.

2. Olay Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream ($24.99)

This may sound silly, but this cream is what I imagine a sophisticated socialite may have on her nightstand. It’s on the thick side, but surprisingly sinks into the skin really quickly, delivering hydration and instant results with 25% more advanced anti-aging ingredients. My skin feels so good when I put this on after an otherwise harsh skin care routine, since I’m battling some problem areas right now. It’s actually a great addition to my routine since it uses Amino-Peptide Complex II to aid in surface cell regeneration. Not only is this great for anti-aging, but also helps in my quest for clear and even skin. Since it contains skin care’s “it” ingredient, hyaluronic acid, it also helps my skin retain moisture. When paired with the Miracle Boost Concentrate, they deliver 60% more anti-aging ingredients!

3. Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Daily Moisturizer ($19.99)

Finally, a great every day moisturizer with anti-aging benefits! The new formula fights 7 signs of aging with two times more green tea antioxidants. It smooths, evens tone, brightens, refines pores, targets age spots, restores firmness, and moisturizes. I don’t know about you, but most of those are concerns I was targeting anyway before I started thinking about anti-aging! It also helps exfoliate and defend against surface free radicals, now with 50% more vitamin E and double the amount of green tea extract. As with any daily moisturizer I typically recommend, this one has SPF 30 for a good base layer of protection.

If you’re trying to build your own anti-aging skin care routine, check this out: if you buy 2 Olay products, you can get a $5 gift card at Target. The promo is going on using the Cartwheel app now through May 13, 2017. I got mine, and used it to buy the third product! Score!

When did you start using anti-aging skin care?

Prevention is definitely key. Add some yam to your diet, and your skin will be great.

I wish I had started in my 20’s 🙁 I didn’t start until early 30’s instead. This is my favorite anti aging line though – works really well with my skin

I started using anti-aging products in my 20s and my current (future) self is so thankful for that choice! Olay was actually one of my first anti-aging creams back in the day.

I wish I could send this post to one of my DIL’s but then I’d be “that” MIL. Taking care of your skin should start when young.

I’ve had to get into skincare in a big way after my skin underwent severe breakouts last year. I used to love the Olay 7-in-1 moisturising cream back in the day, though I haven’t repurchased. The SPF version sounds perfect for a day moisturiser.

I used this line from day one of its introduction for at least 10 years, and I can honestly say the Microsculpting Cream is incredible. The serum hadn’t come out then, but I’m sure it’s terrific too.
