At this point in the year, I am always on the run. Finals are approaching in school, I’ve got a ton of projects at work, and of course keeping up with the beauty world. When I do find down time, I like immersing myself in a good book. Currently, I’m reading Deep Blue, Jennifer Donnelly’s new mermaid tale. I’m a sucker for a good fantasy novel.
The main character, Serafina, is on a quest to save her Mer nation. The princess is constantly moving and on the run, sort of like how I feel (except I’m not being chased by bad guys…)! I was inspired by her adventure and created a quick mermaid braid hair tutorial. It’s a shortcut french braid, only weaving in new hair every few notches– perfect for mornings when I need to get up and go, just like Serafina!
How To:
- Take a top section of hair and start a normal braid.
- After a couple notches, bring in hair from the left and right sides and incorporate it into the braid.
- Braid normally for another three notches, then add hair again. Repeat this pattern until you reach the nape of your neck.
- Split the remaining hair into three sections and finish with a normal braid.
- Pancake the braid by tugging for a loose, mermaid-like appearance.
If you like a good adventure, check out Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly, which releases on May 6th!

I’m so jealous of your full thick hair ! It makes the braid look 100x better

I am a huge fan of braids… during the summer I try to use them as often as possible to keep my hair at bay. You have such thick hair though compare to me… I love it and you look gorgeous!

I love your hair! You need to do a like a million more tutorials like this!

Great tutorial! I used to love wearing braids like that, and now I only do buns or slick ponytails. Maybe I should try it again for old times’ sake 🙂

I wish my hair was thick enough to braid!

I’d never heard of this type of braid. My hair lends itself very nicely to braiding in that it just clings to itself. Unfortunately, the texture and color tend to obscure any detail in the braid. I think this is pretty, and I’m going to try it.

That’s because I created the hairstyle! Well, really it’s just a shortcut french braid… same technique but you only add in the hair every few notches as opposed to each weave. I agree that with my curly hair it’s hard to see detail in braid styles so I usually straighten beforehand. But even with curly hair, this would be a pretty and fast way to get hair out of your face 🙂

Awesome tutorial but I suck at braids. Wahhh! Looks gorgeous on you, girl!
Eugenia
You make it look so easy. I am not a talented braider!!

It definitely takes a lot of practice (and arm power!)

I love braids; though I suck at self-French-braiding, I’ll try this out for sure. Oh, and you have very thick hair! Mine will probably end up as thin as a rat’s tail haha.

This might be a lot easier for you than regular french braiding since you’re not adding hair into every single weave– that’s always my struggle 🙂
Phyrra
I love the hair! Great tutorial

When I had long hair, I used to do this but that was before the mermaid days. Such a pretty look
