e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eyeshadows Review

With the metallic trend seriously having a moment right now, I was excited for the release of the new e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eyeshadow.

I haven’t had a lot of experience with liquid eyeshadows, which are essentially extremely thin cream eyeshadows really. However, these eyeshadows are supposed to offer a bold metallic look and has a formula infused with purified water (as with the rest of the Aqua Beauty line) and Vitamin E for a cooling effect.

The e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eyeshadows ($4) currently come in four shades: Liquid Gold, Brushed Copper, Rose Gold, and Molten Bronze. They range from sheer to fairly pigmented, which I’ll go into in a few. The formula is very wet, but sets rather quickly and once it’s set, it’s a dry finish. The shadow is easy to blend while it’s still wet, so if you do it fast enough you can get a really pretty all-over-lid look by placing the color on the lid and blending up and out. This is probably my favorite way to wear them, though you can definitely pair them with powder shadows for a more complete look.

L to R: Liquid Gold, Brushed Copper, Rose Gold, Molten Bronze.

The lightest two shades, Liquid Gold and Brushed Copper, go on semi-sheer and add what I consider to be a “glossy” effect to the eye. I don’t think they really look full on metallic, since it’s difficult to build them up to full opacity. In fact, I’ve actually been using these as highlighters on the face— both around the eyes and on my cheekbones. Now, keep in mind that these give off more shimmer/glitter than they do sheen, but if you like that look, then these can definitely be double duty products.

The deeper two shades, Rose Gold and Molten Bronze are more pigmented, with Molten Bronze giving us the most color. These are the ones I reach for most often for a one-and-done look when I want to give my eyes a twinkle without doing an all out routine. I’ll swipe on the shadow using the doe-foot applicator all over the lid and a little bit into my crease, then I’ll blend the edges out using my fingers.

I would suggest using these with a primer, but let the primer completely dry down first before applying so it doesn’t interfere with the shadows’ formula and consistency. With primer, they can last about six hours without creasing before they start to fade.

As of now, these are limited edition so if they look like something you could get some use out of, pick them up now on e.l.f.’s website!

Which is your favorite shade?

These look almost identical to the same colors in their shadow pots. I think I’ll pass as I already have the pots, but I love the colors 🙂

These shades are so pretty. I usually avoid liquid shadows, but these might work well as a base for a powder shadow!

Love these shades. Not sure how well they would go over with my aging skin, but they sure are pretty!

I’m gonna have to take a pass on these! The shades are super gorgeous, but it doesn’t sound like they’d fare well on my oily, hooded lids.

I think you’re probably right!… unless you blend them out a LOT in which case they lose their purpose lol

I bought two of these a few months ago and like them when I’m doing a simple eye. They do make a good base for powder too. I think they are only on their website though.

Love all those shades. My Walmart never has the great stuff you review in stock so I guess I’ll order online.

I like liquid shadows as long as they’re not too drying. I’ll pick up one of these when I see them in stores, I hope

The bronze one is definitely my favourite! I love those deeper golden hues on my skin tone, and I think that is about as much of the metallic trend that I could manage to pull off.

They’re definitely an easy way to try out the trend… and affordably too!
