Covergirl TruBlend Undercover Concealer Review for Combo Skin

If you’ve been plugged into the beauty community, then you’re probably aware that Covergirl just released a new drugstore concealer that is already taking the world by storm.

The new Covergirl TruBlend Undercover Concealer is full coverage with a matte finish, comes in 30 shades to match 99% skin tones, and is said to conceal all imperfects all day without caking or cracking. Aside from the brand’s new cruelty free status, this formula completely vegan as well. It seems to check all the boxes, am I right?

I was giddy when three shades finally arrived for me to test out. For reference, I use the shade M10 in the TruBlend Matte Made foundation— light/medium with a slightly yellow undertone. I found that in the Undercover concealer, M100 Golden Natural seemed to be the best match. I’ll be using L300 Golden Ivory for highlighting when I wear a full face of glam, though, and I’m saving M400 Warm Nude for my “tan” shade in case I gain more color this summer.

I am loving the applicator for this concealer, which features a large fluffy doe tip to apply straight from the tube. First impression of the formula: she’s creamy, and the coverage is real. This concealer goes on totally opaque and spreads well— less is more!

Here comes the first issue I had with the Undercover concealer. Usually when I apply concealer, I apply it to all areas of my face that need coverage first, then start blending with a damp sponge. However, this concealer started drying very quickly, and I was struggling to blend fast enough. I would definitely suggest to start blending immediately after application and work in sections that way— otherwise it will set and become hard to blend. As long as you work while the concealer is fresh, it blends out easily and the edges will become nearly indiscernible on top of your skin.

It actually looks so invisible once blended out that I’ve started to use it in lieu of foundation on days where I just want to conceal dark spots and acne without putting on a full face of makeup. With that said, this is a matte formula… a very matte formula. It doesn’t look good on top of dry skin, and it does, in fact, make my skin feel slightly dry when applied over a fresh face without foundation. So as someone with combo skin, I need to be mindful where I apply this. I actually discovered flaky patches after applying this concealer that I didn’t even know were there.

My second issue with this concealer is that it does, in fact, fall into my fine lines… and being 26, I don’t have many and I don’t want the few I have on display. I noticed this mostly on my forehead and under my eyes. I’ve always had creases under my eyes, it’s just the way they’re shaped, and this concealer wasn’t kind to them unless I set it with powder. Setting under-eye concealer with powder may seem like a given, but when a product claims to not cake or crack, I’m expecting it to deliver without the use of other products.

However, as long as I set the concealer with powder (I used the new Covergirl TruBlend Loose Minerals Powder in Banana), this looked and stayed smooth without any bunching in lines. After using powder over an already-matte concealer, I used a face mist to help add radiance (and much-needed moisture) back to my skin, which also helped the product look more natural. The coverage lasted all day without any breakdown, even in my oilier areas.

Overall, I definitely think this is still one of the best full coverage concealers at the drugstore currently— the all-day coverage can’t be beat. Those with combo skin will just have to be careful about applying over dry skin, those with dry skin should probably avoid altogether, and you may have to use other products to combat creasing and a dry feeling/appearance.

You can find the CoverGirl TruBlend Undercover Concealer at Ulta Beauty for $10.99.

I used to use one of theirs, I think it had a blue lid, but I have moved to the Fit Me by Maybelline now and like it a lot better. Good to know about the new ones tho because its been a bit!

I’m curious. I’ve been using the ELF Camo concealer for a couple of weeks and I like it quite a bit if I use a tiny amount. Is the Covergirl formula the same? If not, how is it different from the ELF?

I haven’t picked this up yet, and I’m still a little on the fence. I have under eye creasing naturally as well, and while I don’t object to setting with powder (as I normally do anyway), I’m not sure I want to pick up a spray as well since I don’t use them consistently. My matte setting spray obviously won’t cut it!

Yeah a matte spray would probably end up making it uncomfortable. I will say that after more testing, JUST for the under eye area I was good with just powder and no spray. It’s only when I’m using it to conceal blemishes and such that I feel I need the spray for balance.

From the pictures above, it looked like it worked very well for you. It did cover the small amount of darkness under you eyes. I don’t have a lt of darkness, just a lot of wrinkles! lol

I only recently started using concealer under my eyes. I see the benefit and find a makeup routine kind of relaxing.

If the concealer has these problems then it might not be good for women who are less savvy about makeup than we are. Without reading your review I wouldn’t know the tricks to make it work. It’s nice that CG has gone back to being cruelty-free so I give them props for that.
