In Bending the Budget, we explore both high-end and budget-friendly beauty products you can use to achieve the same goal. They might not necessarily be dupes, but rather recommendations based on what I like about both products, or what they claim to accomplish.
One makeup item I cannot live without is mascara. Even when I don’t have any other makeup on, applying a tad of mascara will give my mood a boost and can make me feel polished.
While I rarely splurge on mascara, since it’s only said to last around 3-4 months before it expires, there have been a few high end products that have wowed me. With that being said, most of my holy grail mascaras are from the drugstore. Check out the below picks to get dramatic, bold lashes– just like I like ’em!
Mally Volumizing Mascara – $20
This mascara was one that surprised me to the core when I first tried it. Despite its simplistic packaging, this mascara brings drama to the lashes. It lifts, fans, thickens and lengthens to create va-va-voom eyelashes that don’t look clumpy, nor unnatural.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – $23
While the name offers up a large claim that can be debated, the results of this mascara cannot be ignored. Even at just one coat, your lashes will be noticeably darker and have added length. The hourglass wand makes it easy to coat all of your lashes at once.
Benefit They’re Real Mascara – $23
This is a fantastic mascara that really separates and fans the lashes. The comb wand has a tiny ball at the end that makes it super easy to grab the small lashes in the corner on either side of your eye. They’re Real is also available in a mini size for $10, which lasts just about three months… so you can actually treat yourself to this high-end treat for less!
Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara – $6
Who doesn’t want eyes as wide as Twiggy? This mascara quickly became my new drugstore holy grail after it seriously delivered some big-lash-oomph! Read my full review and see before & after photos here.
Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara – $7
While I’m still a novice when it comes to expert falsies application, this mascara gave me the drama I needed without all the fuss. This was my go-to for over 3 years! The “flared” version has a curved wand that will accentuate the outer corner lashes, which matches my everyday cat eye liner perfectly!
L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara – $8
Relatively new to the mascara scene compared to the others that made this list, the Miss Manga mascara has taken the drugstore by storm with its night-and-day effect on lashes. While this one can tend to give the spidery effect with lots of layers, it undoubtedly supercharges the length and volume of natural lashes.
