For a long time, Adam and I avoided creating a physical gift registry. Having lived together for over four years now, we had accumulated a lot of the typical “building a home” stuff. On top of that, we bought a house four months before the wedding, and we were forced to purchase most of the essentials right away because we couldn’t wait around for things like sheets, blankets, etc.
I learned very quickly, though, that friends and family WANT to get you physical gifts. As much as we only wanted cash to replenish our savings account, I decided to create a gift registry of things that would actually get used. I didn’t want people to guess what we needed/wanted and end up with a to-do list of returns, so I scoured the internet for both practical items, and also things I just thought would be fun to have.
Whether you’re buying for a bride in your life, or you’re a bride wondering what to put on your bridal shower registry, check out these ideas for gifts that are less likely to be returned. Of course, I strongly recommend including a gift receipt just in case you’re off the mark or the recipient needs to exchange for a different size.
Lingerie is a classic bridal shower gift, but it can be a little tricky buying for another person. Especially if you don’t know whether the gifts will be opened in front of the entire party, play it safe with something classic, yet sexy. Babydoll and chemise styles are a perfect choice because they’re flirty without being too out-there, and offer a little coverage for more conservative brides. I love this lace chemise from 3Wishes, which has a single-clasp halter neck so you don’t have to worry about fumbling. It’s simple, sophisticated, and perfect for the wedding night!
2. Clear Mixing Bowls
I knew I had to register for clear mixing bowls immediately. It’s one of the very few gifts my mom still has and uses from her own wedding registry from 30 years ago! Having mixing bowls of all sizes helps you with food prep, but I also use them to serve sides, chips, sauces or salads when entertaining.
3. Bride Robe
This is one of those things that I really wanted, but didn’t want to buy myself— perfect for a shower gift! A bride robe is a cute day-of accessory for getting ready before the dress goes on. You can also bring it along to the bachelorette party if you have any spa activities planned. It makes for great photos and lets the bride feel that much more special. This robe from 3Wishes has a holographic script on the back, and comes with a satin chemise to match with a padded lingerie hanger!
4. Handheld Mixer
Another tool that makes life a lot easier, the handheld mixer I received has already upped my baking game. I got the classic KitchenAid Ultra Power Hand Mixer (in pink, of course) and it makes homemade cookies, cakes, breads and mixing other ingredients a breeze. I used to hate the prep-work of baking, because I knew I was in for a serious arm workout with my flimsy whisk. Now, I look forward to it!
5. Food Processor/Blender
I was missing out on so many great recipes because I didn’t have a food processor or powerful blender for certain steps. A good food processor is a kitchen essential and can help make everything from guacamole, to rich pasta sauces, to homemade ice cream! The one I received for my shower was the Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Food Processor which is the perfect size to make big batches but store easily.
6. Locking Food Storage
Another super practical gift that every home needs, food storage that you can trust is essential. I’m obsessed with these Popit boxes that are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe to make life so much easier. They’re completely spill proof, which means I can even use them for soups and sauces, and they stack into each other to make storage a snap.
7. Extra Sheets
Like I said, we had to buy our bedding as soon as we moved into our new home so that we could, you know, sleep. But having extra sheets either for your own bed or a guest bed is always a great idea. All of our sheets are a light gray, which will match any comforter or room color scheme. I really dig the microfiber sheets feel, which is soft and doesn’t wrinkle easily.
