5 Ways to Save Your Hair from the Sun

As long as summer lasts, we are bombarded with messages to never forget the sunscreen, take extra precautions in protecting our skin, and limit sun exposure to help prevent cancer. Your skin isn’t the only thing at risk, though… the powerful sun can also cause damage to our hair. So maybe hair-burn doesn’t exist, but you’ll definitely want to protect your locks as much as you do your skin to keep it healthy and flowing.

How to Protect Hair from the Sun

Here are some quick tips for keeping your hair in its best shape during sunny summer days:

1. Stay Hydrated

The sun breaks down the protein in hair, so just as you would hydrate your body, your hair needs it too! Use a hydrating shampoo, conditioner, and styling agent that will help ward off the sun’s damaging effects. I would also recommend a quick deep conditioning treatment, like the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle, after a particularly long day of exposure.

2. Work in the SPF

SPF isn’t just for the skin. There are a plethora of hair products that contain top notch protection from the sun’s UV rays. This will also help prevent your color from fading or changing. A lot of hair protectants also double up as frizz controllers or all day hold, like the Garnier Fructis Style UV Color Shield Anti-Humidity Hairspray.

3. Cover Up

Pretty simple, right? If you’re in a hurry to rush out the door, grab a stylish hat to protect your hair from exposure. This will also help keep your face out of the sun, doubling up on your sun safety. Plus, now you don’t have to worry about styling your hair. Woo!

4. Do Your Part

When applying sunscreen to your skin, you probably forget about the area that is most likely in direct sunlight! Spread a dab of sunscreen directly on your hair’s part, where the scalp is exposed. Alternatively, dilute some sunscreen with water in a spray bottle and apply it that way.

5. Rinse After Your Dip

Salt crystals left behind after swimming in the ocean can increase sun damage to the hair by catching the UV rays. Always rinse with fresh water after your swim (or use a water bottle). Same rule applies for the pool, which contains many chemicals that can harm your hair. Don’t let them soak in!

I admit, I sometimes slack on some of these, but I always try to use a spray with SPF when going outside.

Great tips… I’m always about hats when at the beach… my hair can be so damaged if I don’t take care of it. I swear it’s just as sensitive as my skin. lol

Great tips! I just use my regular sunscreen for my hair in case I’ll be out in the sun too long.

what’s a hair part? lolol. I do love a good hat, though I don’t remember to grab one as often as I’d like. I do look so cute in hats, though. You wouldn’t believe. Plus, it keeps my dark hair from absorbing all that sun!

Great tips! I could be doing a much better job keeping my hair in shape this summer. I need to see a hairstylist asap to get a trim too, I’m looking kind of rough and frizzy this summer!

Super great tips. Most people dont think about their hair. I have learned in So Cal that my hair gets damaged badly by the weather out here. So I make sure to protect it at all lengths. Great post!!

Barrier sunscreens don’t work so well for hair and scalp, in my experience and chemical is out of the question so I rely on hats, an umbrella and seeking shade.

That is a beautiful picture. It looks like a hair ad from a magazine. 🙂
