5 Bad Beauty Habits to Break… Right Now!

    We all have our personal beauty regimens and routines. You’ve probably even developed your own custom beauty tips and tricks. But how many of these are habits that are doing more harm than good? Many beauty customs have been widely practiced— or ignored— for years, even though they’re not the best for us in the long run. Check out these 5 common bad beauty habits you should work on breaking now.


    Popping Pimples
    I know how tempting it is when a blemish appears, stealing the spotlight on the stage that is your face. As much as you want to eliminate your acne ASAP, merely touching pimples can make them worse, much less squeezing them. When you attempt to pop blemishes, you run the risk of pushing the bacteria farther into your skin, as well as transferring new bacteria from your hands. If you’ve got long fingernails, you might even pierce your skin and cause an infection. Um, no thanks! Let your pimples heal using acne treatments or masks… not your fingers!

    Skipping the SPF
If you’re skipping the sunscreen— or relying on what little is in your makeup— you’re choosing to be more prone to melanoma, wrinkles, sun spots, and sunburn! Even if your foundation touts an impressive SPF, you’re not applying nearly as much as needed for ample protection. Double up with a moisturizer that also contains sunscreen.

You know that archaic hair tip to brush 100 strokes every night for shiny hair? Turns out, thats one of the worst things you could do to your locks. Over-brushing your hair causes frizziness and breakage. Furthermore, avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet. Wet hair stretches and breaks a lot easier than when it’s dry. My hairstylist told me if you absolutely must brush through wet tangles, either do it in the shower with conditioner applied, or use a Wet Brush.

    Passing on Protectant
    If you’re heat styling your hair regularly, or even just once in a while, you must not skimp on the protectant. There are so many products on the market like argan oil, serum and hair balm that will protect your hair against intense heat. Imagine: if you can burn your skin touching a hot flat iron, you can safely assume it will burn your hair. I went years heat styling my hair without using protectant, and I’ve got tons of breakage and split ends to show for it.

    Picking Polish
    I don’t know what’s so satisfying about peeling off nail polish… especially gel polish, which is such a pain to remove on your own. However, when you peel off any lacquer from your nail, it rips off layers of your nail with it. This leads to thinner, more brittle and breaking nails. Plus, they always end up looking all raggedy anyway, and it’s no use trying to cover up with more polish.

    Do you suffer from any bad beauty habits? I was a nail biter for 13 years, and the only reason I stopped is because I couldn’t bite down for three weeks after having my tonsils taken out, and that kicked the habit for me!

    2. I’m a horrible offender.. 30 lashes with a wet noodle for me! I don’t use nearly enough SPF, especially living in Florida. And I am always picking my polish off. And picking my pimples. Oh, I’m in trouble now!
